Synopsis

The comedy centres on a moral tale of Los Angeles gigolo, Nikki, his older, wealthy client Samantha and a waitress Heather, for whom he has real feelings for. Nikki, who has slept his way into a life of privilege, shares his secrets with us as he hosts parties and beds scores of women, all while living it up at the Hollywood Hills home of a middle-aged female attorney, Samantha. Everything goes well until Nikki meets a gorgeous waitress named Heather, who, unbeknownst to him, is playing the same game that he is. As the truth of their life unravels, they find themselves sexually charged by a game of one-upsmanship that has them dining at fine restaurants and crashing posh parties, until the truth of their lives forces them to choose between love and money.

Review By Lai Swee Wei

Ashton Kutcher has long starred as the ladies' man in countless movies of the past. With his looks and eminent style to match, he passes off easily as a womaniser making him the top actor to fit in the leading role in "Spread". He plays Nikki (a rather odd name for a guy), a homeless yet charming man who has slept his way into a life of privilege and shares his secrets with viewers as he attends high-end parties and beds scores women. Not sure if the Nikki's advice would work, but they surely are amusing, what with the roll-over and give a sleepy smile routine. Admittedly, if only the movie poster was done up a lot better. The unattractive design gives the impression that it's a story about a swimming competition.

Angled as a sex comedy, "Spread" delivers that sexy and passionate element well during the first half of the movie, while the second half bears much tension and drama after he meets a girl version of himself - a maniser. Amusingly, the movie is not afraid to show straightforward sex scenes that are not quite run-of-the-mill. The actors involved are bold enough to bear their bodies, portraying two people purely enjoying the act that takes place in several various locations both indoors and outdoors.

The film opens up with him meeting a 40-something wealthy lawyer Samantha (Anne Heche) and after a few wild romps in between, he meets Heather (Margarita Levieva), a waitress who is oddly standoffish to his charms and he soon finds himself yearning for something different in his live. The film doesn't weigh too heavily on comedy but on relationship dramas. Viewers will enjoy the well-paced story with plenty of visuals that will arouse your senses, whilst delivering a truthful ending. However, it will require viewer's best interest and empathy in order for the ending to be impactful.
